The Inventions: The Mobile Phone

Earlier this week I began sharing with you the inventions I’ve been hinting at the past couple of weeks. Earlier this week we’ve covered the Printing Press, the Steam Engine, the Telegraph, the Microprocessor, and the Internet. Today we reach the final one – the Mobile Phone.

“The first wireless phones in no way resembled the convenient, attractive devices we carry today. At first, wireless phones were almost universally installed in cars. Later came bag phones which could be carried about, but certainly couldn’t fit in a purse or pocket. But that didn’t stop folks from falling in love with mobility. By the end of 1985, there were 340,000 customers in eighty-five markets. Within two years, that number had more than tripled and the industry had generated more than a billion dollars in revenue. By the end of the decade, 5.3 million cell phones had been sold and annual revenues were at $3 billion. AT&T’s study had missed the mark. Badly.”

“One thing is clear – mobility has been a huge hit. According to the CTIA, in mid-2006 there were 219.4 million U.S. wireless subscribers, spending more than $10 billion per month for mobility. And these customers have clearly begun to integrate their mobile devices into how they live, work and play.”

“The global impact is even more dramatic. According to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), it took 21 years for mobile technology to reach the first billion users worldwide. Philip Redman of research firm Gartner, Inc. estimates that nearly half of the world’s population will be mobile users by 2010. “1995 was the year the Internet burst into the consciousness of the general public. Most dramatically, Netscape’s unbelievably rich initial public offering (IPO) of stock on August 9 captured everyone’s attention and launched a thousand startups. However, other companies that would have a much more permanent impact on the Internet, the economy, and how we individually interact with the world were already on their way and celebrated significant milestones during the year. In March, Yahoo was incorporated, graduating from a hobby to a business. Amazon’s online store opened in July. The first auction on eBay was launched on Labor Day. So, in a short six months, three of the companies that have come to define the Internet experience came into being.”

“Over the coming years, the incredible power of networked computing to deliver to us dynamic content, enable us to buy and sell in new ways, and connect us more directly to our extended communities fundamentally changed how we live, how we interact with the world, and how we run our businesses.”

“Bob [Metcalfe] didn’t see growing traffic as a curse, but rather a blessing. Bob observed that the value of any network increases exponentially with the number of participants in the network, and this simple, but true observation has borne his name ever since.”

Earlier this week I began sharing with you the inventions I’ve been hinting at the past couple of weeks. Earlier this week we’ve covered the Printing Press, the Steam Engine, and the Telegraph. Today – the Microprocessor.

“Through most of 1970, Intel’s Ted Hoff worked to create an integrated circuit with all of the components for a complete computer on one slice of semiconductor. The first Intel ‘microprocessor’ was delivered to Intel’s customer, Busicom in February 1971, and later that year Intel introduced its first microprocessor product, the 4004.”

“However, both the community of independent developers of software and hardware products for personal computers, and the growing mass of computer users were desperate for a standard operating environment they could bet on.”

“The resulting product, the IBM PC, was introduced on August 12, 1981 and was an immediate success. In the closing months of that year, IBM sold $43 million in PCs. By the end of 1984, the PC and related products were producing $4 billion in sales, enough to have ranked that division of IBM as #74 in the Fortune 500 index if it had been a standalone company.”

“[T]he continuous doubling of power and halving of costs [Moore’s Law] meant that, by the early 1980s, it was economically viable for companies to move computing power out of the carefully managed data center and onto the desktops of average white collar workers. Earlier this week I began sharing with you the inventions I’ve been hinting at the past couple of weeks. Tuesday it was the Printing Press. Yesterday’s invention was the Steam Engine. Today – the Telegraph.
